My Story

Ian Winchester is originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and graduated from Albuquerque High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of San Francisco, and a Master’s degree and PhD in History from the University of New Mexico, specializing in Modern European history with a regional concentration in Spain.

Ian has more than fifteen years of teaching and tutoring experience working with students from a wide range of backgrounds. While at the University of New Mexico, he tutored first-generation and low-income high school students preparing for college. He also spent a year living in Spain teaching English to learners ranging from preschool children to professionals in international businesses. In addition to this work, he taught during his graduate studies and later spent five years as an adjunct professor. His teaching philosophy emphasizes not only subject mastery in areas such as history, English, and writing, but also the development of critical thinking, executive function, and the broader academic skills students need to succeed.

Outside of teaching, Ian enjoys pursuing many of the interests that shaped his academic path. He has a lifelong passion for history and travel, and his time living in Spain further deepened his appreciation for cultural exchange and global perspectives. He also enjoys snowboarding, hiking, and spending time outdoors in the mountains of New Mexico.
