Kaiya was born and raised in Albuquerque, graduated from Sandia High School, went to college in Las Cruces, and found her way back home after graduating as an Aggie! The experience away from home was refreshing and much needed, but the chance to start her teaching career closer to family drew her back to her roots. 

 

Having been blessed with amazing teachers and mentors along the way, Kaiya knew rather early on that teaching would be her future. Whether it was coincidence or not, her loudest cheerleaders and supporters happened to be her English teachers. While the subject area lends itself to written expression, creativity, imagination, critical thinking, and learning about the world around us, it's the guides we meet along the way that can make English Language Arts truly come to life. Between the many amazing advocates in her life and her general love for reading and writing, Kaiya chose to follow in the footsteps of her mentors and earned a BS in Education with a focus in English Language Arts and a Minor in History.

 

Immediately after graduating from NMSU, Kaiya accepted a position teaching high school ELA at a charter school in South Valley, Albuquerque. She worked there for 13 years in multiple roles and is immeasurably grateful for the many years of professional growth as well as the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students, families, and her community. She recently left the world of formal education to work in the nonprofit sector which has expanded her learning community to include adults reengaging with their education and seeking to better their lives through education.

 

Kaiya welcomes the chance to work with the Piñon Tutoring community as another great step in her journey, and is excited to be working with new families and students!
